Cold Snap and Weight Loss
January 16, 2009
First, an apology to the Lower 48 for the subzero temperatures. That came from us. We experienced about two weeks of the bitter cold, and now we suddenly have rain and temps in the mid- to upper 40s. In the course of a few days we had a nearly 70 degree change.
Now the roads are pools of water covering ice, and something has happened that I think has only happened once before in the 10 years we've been living here: Anchorage schools were closed for 3 days in a row. It takes a lot for schools to close here. A lot. A lot a lot.
On another note, Keith and I are losing weight together. It's been about 2 weeks, and we've each lost about 4 lbs. We're watching what we eat and exercising like mad. I won't say what our goals are, but we'll post pics when we meet them. Don't hold your breath waiting for the "before" pics.

Countdown to the election (and Hawaii)
November 1, 2008
For the first time ever we are displaying a political sign in our yard. I am so nervous and excited in anticipation of Tuesday. The kids and I will be wearing Obama buttons to the polls. I decided not to vote early and just take my chances on Tuesday, even if it is 10F out and the wait is long. I have a feeling that Wednesday will be a very happy day indeed.
Also, in a few weeks Scarlett and I will be headed for Hawaii. I think that Keith is more excited than we are. I'm a bit suspicious about his intentions, as he keeps looking up coffee plantations for sale online and encouraging me to check out the real estate market while I'm there.

New babies and future plans
October 2, 2008
I had the honor of being present at two births last week, and there are more doula clients on the way. Luckily my time away from Scarlett has been limited. I'm very lucky that all of the jobs I have (mommy, homeschooler, childbirth educator, doula) are ones that I love.
I was talking with the kids the other day about future careers and I told them to concentrate on what interests them and what they think they'd truly love to do day in and day out. Our lives are too precious and short to waste them doing something we hate. Surely there are times when the need for money to simply pay the bills will dictate that we accept jobs that are boring, or even intolerable. My hope for my kids is that those times will be temporary, and not life-long occupations.

Saturday in the Park
September 27, 2008
Our whole family attended a rally in Anchorage today. The theme was anti-Palin, but we threw some pro-Obama support in there too. It was a beautiful Fall day and the turn out was impressive by Alaskan standards. So far I haven't seen any pictures of us on the news, but I'll load some pictures of our signs later.
My brother got married today and I'd like to wish him and his wife all the happiness in the world. I wish I could have been there.

After 3 years of silence...
September 26, 2008
I've decided to pay more attention to our family website. I have deleted most of the old material and given the site a new look. I can't promise that I'll post something new daily, or even weekly, but I'll try not to let years go by again without updating anything.
